Porterville has attractions to suit every taste...

Lake Success

One of the most popular recreational attractions, Lake Success, a man-made  
lake located 5 miles east of the town, along Highway 190,  provides 
outstanding fishing, water sports, and nice camping areas; and it provides 
a habitat for a myriad of birds and small animals.
                                                                                                                                                                                    

Sequoia National Forest

 

 

  
The "Gateway to the Sequoias," Porterville is just a 45-minute trip away from the Sierras to the East, and a 90 minute drive from the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks to the northeast.
  Giant Sequoia National Monument provides Year-round recreational opportunities on almost 550 miles of wild and scenic beauty. The monument protects 38 groves of the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). These trees can tower 270 feet high and reach 30 feet in diameter. Elevations range from 2,000 feet in the foothills to peaks over 10,000 feet offering spectacular views and adventure in giant redwood groves, granite monoliths, glacier-torn canyons, roaring rivers and lush flower-filled meadows.
Also within a few hours drive are Yosemite National Park, snow skiing at Sierra Summit or swimming in the ocean at Morro Bay.

The Porterville area is abundant with wildlife such as deer, wild pigs, rabbits, squirrels, quail and many other small game.
Attractions in Town
 
Located throughout Porterville are historic buildings harkening back to the city's pioneering days, many of 
which have been preserved in their original styles, or remodeled into charming stores or professional 
offices.

 
Other Items of Interest include:  The Barn Theatre, where talented local
 performers stage such Broadway hits as "Evita" and "Guys and Dolls... A number
 of very well-known celebrities that have made their mark in acting have emerged
 from this very stage, which is located on Plano Avenue in Porterville...

 

The Zalud House
 

Located in the downtown area, the Zalud House, built in 1891 and maintained in its original condition, is now a museum boasting a marvelous rose garden often used for weddings.

It hosts guided tours and offers its nationally-recognized rose garden for weddings and receptions.

Located in downtown Porterville is The Porterville Museum, once the old Southern Pacific passenger depot, houses a variety of Western and Indian historical objects, as well as occasional special and seasonal displays, farm and home articles from the mid-1800's.

Rotating exhibits of special interest can be viewed throughout the year.

The World Ag Expo

World Ag Expo, held 30 minutes from Porterville in Tulare County, (the #2 Ag County in th world) on the 
second week of February is the world's largest annual agricultural exposition, with 2.6 million square 
feet of exhibit space, over 1,600 exhibitors, and more than 100,000 attendees.

City Parks


Porterville's City Parks are great sites for picnics, family outings and community events.  The east side's Murray Park has a duck pond, picnic tables, meandering paths and beautiful landscaping, with the Municipal Swimming Pool and the Municipal Golf Course adjacent to the Park.  Veteran's Park, on the west side, has a children's playground, a walking trail and the Porterville Area Vietnam Veterans 
Memorial, dedicated to those local servicemen who served and died in the Vietnam Conflict.  Other parks have tennis courts and baseball fields.
